OUR APPROACH

We work collaboratively with our clients to help them implement the best solutions to their personal and professional problems. Our evidence-based coaching and counselling techniques are specifically selected to meet the unique needs of high-performing professionals.

How is Ekstedt Consulting different from other business coaches, life coaches and mentors?

Ekstedt Consulting is different from typical business coaches, life coaches and mentors because practice principal Pete Ekstedt is a fully-qualified mental health care professional with a masters degree in counselling from Monash University.

Pete has been thoroughly trained to work effectively with people experiencing a broad range of professional and personal challenges.

Unlike many business and life coaches, Pete has more to offer than simple positive thinking and/or access to his own business experience (though he is happy to bring both of those to the table). Pete can offer rigorous, evidence-based approaches to help our clients achieve their goals.

How is Ekstedt Consulting different from other counsellors?

Ekstedt Consulting is different from typical counsellors because we have the required expertise and experience to cater exclusively to the unique needs of senior leaders.

Practice principal Pete Ekstedt genuinely understands the pressure our clients are under and the high expectations they have of themselves. Pete enjoyed 20 years in corporate management with large corporations including NRMA, ANZ and Hewlett-Packard. He followed that with almost six years as CEO of a charity.

Unlike many counsellors, Pete has extensive experience of reporting directly to a board of directors, of being responsible for the revenue, profitability and operational results of large teams (and an entire organisation), of spending many years during which half of his time was spent on international business travel, and of planning and implementing high-stakes strategic initiatives such as restructures, mergers and acquisitions.

How is Ekstedt Consulting different from employee assistance programs?

Ekstedt Consulting is different from typical employee assistance programs because we offer complete independence and total discretion.

Ekstedt Consulting does not accept payment from employers, and will never provide any information or reporting to an employer without a client's express written instructions and/or an enforceable court order.

We never expect clients to attend a session at a branded EAP clinic, or to wait in a reception area where they might meet employees, partners, customers, journalists, board members or others. Upon arrival, all clients are immediately hosted in a private, unbranded suite.

What is our theoretical model?

Every senior leader faces a unique set of challenges, and possesses a unique array of personal characteristics and strengths. The complexities encountered by high-performing people can rarely be successfully addressed using a standardised, "paint by numbers" approach.

So at Ekstedt Consulting we employ an integrative model. This means we bring together a range of coaching and counselling techniques based on the individual needs of each client. A personally customised plan is developed with each client, and may include techniques drawn from many different modalities, including:

  • Executive Coaching

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

  • Narrative Therapy

  • Person-centred Therapy

  • Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy

  • Couples Therapy

  • Family Therapy

  • Emotion-Focused Therapy

  • Motivational Interviewing

  • Solution-Focused Therapy

We have a strong preference for techniques which are supported by research evidence in peer-reviewed academic journals.

We maintain a trusted network of specialist practitioners (GPs, psychologists, couples counsellors, etc.) to whom we may refer our clients based on their specific needs.
